Our partner church in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) has been independent since 1959. Its roots lie in the joint efforts of Lutheran and Reformed mission organizations from Scandinavia, North America and Germany. With five million members, the EECMY is the largest Lutheran church in Africa and the second largest worldwide. Under its motto „Serving the Whole Person“, the church cares for both the physical and spiritual needs of people, and performs both missionary and development work. EECMY is involved in rural development projects, schools, and hospitals. It works on issues such as literacy, birth control and female genital mutilation.

The EECMY is a partner organisation of the EKBO and the Evangelical Church of Anhalt. Berlin Mission works in close cooperation with the Gudina Tumsa Foundation. Tumsa was general secretary of Mekane Yesus until 1979, when he was abducted and murdered by the revolutionary forces of the time. In an effort to keep his holistic theology alive, the Berlin mission supports the foundation by funding publications and theological seminars.

Key aspects of activities in cooperation with local partners:

  • Support of a peace organisation and its educational programs for peace, democracy, human rights and conflict resolution,
  • Help in improving the situation of women; education in women issues, such as genital mutilation and HIV,
  • Development projects in the areas of alphabetization, horticulture, tree nurseries, water supply and source protection, the building of schools, kindergartens, and churches,
  • Promotion of partnerships between rural and urban communities and church districts.
